Important notes from Principal Powers

This message is to inform you that an H1N1 flu vaccine clinic will be held at Cherokee within the next few weeks. If you would like for your Cherokee student to participate in this free vaccine clinic, please contact Health Services at 523-1609 to obtain a permission form and vaccine information sheets. Written parental consent is required and permission forms must be returned in order for your child to participate.

Other important events
The Cherokee Barn Dance is November 13th. 6th & 7th grade 6:30 to 8:00 and 8th grade 7:00 to 8:30. Tickets go on sale the week of November 9th. The cost is a PTSA membership of $5. You must have a ticket prior to the dance. The last day to purchase tickets is November 11th. If you have any questions you may email Connie Faria at Connie@autoworldofspringfield.com.

Thanks for all the moon pies! We will be enjoying them as we walk through our Astronomer gallery today!

10/26-10/30 - Is October over already?!

Hello! Hope everyone had a great 1st quarter. Grade cards will be coming home this Friday and will need to be signed and returned to your student’s reading teacher.

We are headed to the Discovery Center this Friday. Please remember to pack your son/daughter a sack lunch (must be completely disposable). We will be gone from 10 until 2:00 pm. Electronics and bags are not permitted and we suggest for our students to leave these items at home. Encourage your student to dress in layers, as temperatures are unpredictable.

Parent-teacher conferences are coming up next week. If you would like to schedule, please call the Cherokee office ASAP as slots fill up rapidly.

Last, the science teachers are planning a special activity to welcome our new Astronomy Unit. We are in need of Tang and Moon Pies. If you could send one of these items to school with your son/daughter by Monday November 2, 2009, we would really appreciate it!!

Don't forget to FALL BACK your clocks this weekend! I know I will enjoy my extra hour of sleep!!

10/19-10/23 - We need games!

Hi everyone! We are in need of board, trivia and educational games. We are glad that students are feeling better and returning to school. Thanks for being so active in keeping absent students caught up by requesting assignments.

Our first field trip of the year is Oct 30 to Discovery Center. Please sign and send in permission forms ASAP. Many students have not returned their forms. Without them they cannot attend this great opportunity to explore science in a hands on environment.

Field trip permission forms are due ASAP!! Please send your money and form to your son/daughter's reading teacher. The trip is Oct 30 to Discovery Center. If you are having trouble with the funding please let us know as scholarships are available.

IMPORTANT NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL POWERS

Cherokee families,

We are starting to have a few problems with the crosswalk on Plainview. Please DO NOT stop in the middle of the road to let you student out as we have been very close to having auto accidents and also student injuries. Also, our crossing guard was bumped, but not injured, due to people stopping in the crosswalk and not paying attention. There were students in the crosswalk at this time also.

We all need to be very patient and alert as we have many students that walk or ride bikes to school and we do not want anyone to be injured.

Hard to believe that over half of first quarter has passed us by! The students are continuing to do great work! Please make time to check our individual webpages for weekly updates on classwork, projects, homework, and tests.

This week's reminders

It is a good idea to encourage your son/daughter to dress in layers. With the temperature outside dropping, it could be that classrooms start off cold in the morning and heat up by the end of day. When one is too cold/hot then it can be hard to concentrate.

Progress reports were given to students on 10/1 (Thursday of last week). They are to be returned, signed, by today to students' 8th block reading teacher.

1st quarter ends on 10/23. Please be sure to check on your son/daughter's work to be sure there is nothing missing. Most teachers have deadlines for accepting missing work which are rapidly approaching.

In comm arts Nings over book talk books are due by Friday. There is also a retest over vocab on Wed so be sure to check the Ning for reminders and deadlines!

We are in need of board, card, and dice game donations. Games that are most wanted are Monopoly, Life, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Pictionary, and Balderdash. Trivia card games are also appreciated. Any that have specific content themes in Math, Comm Arts, History, or Science fit the classroom perfectly!

Information on signing up for Parent Teacher Conferences will be coming home soon!

Information on upcoming field trips, including permission and fees for our Oct. 30 field trip to Discovery Center will be coming home in the next couple weeks. If you are available as a chaperon, please let us know by sending a quick email to the Kodiak team.

Important reminders

Open house is Thursday night! Please park at the Community Blood Center and shuttle as parking will be limited. We are excited to meet you!

Fundraiser pick ups are this Friday! Please continue to participate. This is a great way for Cherokee to earn funds while providing you subscriptions to your favorite magazines.

Hope everyone had a restful weekend and were able to get outside to enjoy the fall weather.

Some reminders for this week

1. Fundraiser turn in dates are Tuesday and Friday. This fundraiser is a great way to get subscriptions to your favorite magazines renewed while contributing to Cherokee!

2. Progress reports are to be returned with parent signatures to reading class.

3. Open House is NEXT Thursday - be sure to mark your calendars to come and visit.

Important Reminders

1. Please take part in our current fundraiser. This is a great way to renew magazine subscriptions and contribute to the improving your son/daughter's learning environment!

2. Be sure to check individual teacher sites for upcoming tests and project dates. Even though students are required to fill out their planner, there are instances where a date could be missed. The teacher pages will provide those missed dates!

3. THIS FRIDAY, WE WILL SEND HOME PROGRESS REPORTS!! These will need to be signed and returned with your student to their reading class.

Hi! Welcome to the Kodiak Team!

Tuesday, at 8 AM is our official start date/time for students! It is hard to believe that summer is over!!!!

Some beginning of the year reminders:

1. Please check your student's folders for syllabus and papers that need to be signed and returned. These are typically due by Wednesday and include important information about school policies and supplies for classes.

2. Cell phones and iPods are not allowed to be in use during the school day at Cherokee (7:30 to 2:45). If you need to reach your student, contact the front office at 523-7200 and a message will be sent. If the phone/iPod is confiscated, school policy is that it be sent to office and returned to a parent/guardian at the end of the following school day.

3. Pencils, paper, and other supplies are important to your student's success. Please let us know if you need assistance in acquiring supplies. Also, if you have the ability to buy extra, please send to school for those Kodiaks experiencing challenging circumstances.

4. Please sign up for Kodiak updates by emailing jsherwood@spsmail.org and putting your name and your student's name in the subject line.
